Petition against the Cancellation of the LNCS series from the Irish Research eLibrary

We, the undersigned, are academics, researchers and students working and studying in the field of computer science in Irish Higher Education Institutes. We would like to formally express our sincere disquiet at the recent cancellation of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series from the Irish Research eLibrary (IReL), which was announced on the 29th of January 2010 (link: http://www.irelibrary.ie/news_detail.aspx?id=78).

The LNCS series, including its subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics (LNBI), is the established medium for the publication of new developments in computer science and information technology research and teaching. The LNCS series commenced publication in 1973. Recently the 2500th volume in the series was published. The digital version of the LNCS, which is a crucial resource for those working in the field of computer science, contains over 35,000 papers written by over 50,000 individual scientists and professionals.

In the context of Ireland's €8.2 billion investment in scientific research under the National Development Plan and Strategy for Science,Technology and Innovation (2006 - 2013), canceling access to the largest library resource in the field of computer science is disingenuous in the extreme. Without access to this vast library of work, Ireland's potential to develop a world-class research and development infrastructure in the fields of computer science and information technology is being put at risk.

We ask that the decision to cancel the LNCS series from IReL be reversed immediately.
